It has challenged me to ask how far my belief that we can all create what we desire goes. How deep is it? Can everyone do it?

Are you a people pleaser? Were you taught to be nice, not make waves, and get along at all costs? I know I was, and it's taken a lot to get over.

Subscriptions add up to a lot of money in our businesses, and it’s essential to manage them well to increase profitability and cash flow. We know this, but it is not as easy as it may seem to cancel subscriptions that don’t add value to our business and, instead, subtract from profitability.

Your bookkeeping system should be designed to help you get the information you need to manage your business. I recommend putting all recurring subscriptions in one account in your bookkeeping system regardless of their purpose. If they are in one category, you (or your bookkeeper) can produce a report that shows you all the monthly and annual subscriptions. I call this category “Website and Software Subscriptions.”

So much so that I try not to even use the word. Especially as a licensed CPA. I don’t want to be known as the woo accountant who endorses magical thinking to bypass business principles and effort because I believe in those too.

Subscriptions are a valuable part of the ecosystem of our business. Especially if you run an online business, they feed the soil by helping to capture leads, manage finances, market to customers, automate sales processes, collect payments, deliver programs, and so much more.

Companies like Adobe earn billions of dollars in revenue each month.

Billions!

If software companies are making billions, we are spending billions. Let’s manage our subscriptions closely to keep as much cash in our businesses as possible and only pay for what is providing value.
